Blogging with wordpress both at home and work can be dangerous

This is something horrible that happened to me a few days ago. I lost something like 2 hours of writing for my post “Why wikipedia will never reach quality”.

First I thought of a Wordpress bug. I was really thinking of changing my blog engine but then I tried to figured out how this happened.

In fact I write my blog at home and also at work (I know that’s bad). So I started writing my post at work. I wrote some few words than before living work I hibernated my laptop. Then during the night at home I continued my article during 2 hours. I saved it like a hundreds time as I’m very paranoiac. When I write any document using Microsoft Word or notepad I probably hit “Ctrl+S” every time I do a change in the document. In Wordpress I click “Save and Continue Editing” every 5 minutes so I was pretty sure my post was ready to be published the next day. I switched my home laptop off.

The next day in the morning I switched on my work laptop (different than my home PC) and in fact I did not really switched it on but rather awoke it from hibernation. So it started, all my desktop was recovered including my firefox browser with my blog opened in one tab on the page on which I started my post the day before. And bingo the post has been saved and it was in its initial state (because of the automatic save feature of Wordpress). So I lost instantly all my night work and were left back with the starting words !

I had to rewrite almost everything so that’s really a horrible experience.

So here is a good advice to all Wordpress bloggers: Ntoever let a browser tab opened on the edition of a wordpress blog post before switching your browser or PC off (or before hibernating it). In fact make sure you close your blog tabs in your browser before closing your browser.
